We are back!

After a hard national lockdown, campus restrictions and other difficulties caused by lockdown, we’re happy to announce we have finally got up back up and running and there’s been a lot happening to update you on.

We began recommissioning the brewery in May! After cleaning, re-organising and re-testing our equipment we could finally brew again!! Our first brew back after 15 months was a special edition of our award winning maple and pecan stout, Exam Room Tears imperial stout (10%).

We have also been busy brewing some of our old favourites and new beers to try! One of our most popular beers, lab session (4.3%), has also been brewed again and has proved to be just as popular as we remembered. Our new beer, Back in Session, is a session IPA (3.2%) that is an easy-drinking beer bursting with flavour. We can’t wait for more of you try our new beer at our events! Currently we have fruit cake stout packages ready to go exclusively to The Town Mouse. For this beer we have teamed up with the Town Mouse to raise money for prostate cancer UK. For each pint bought money will be donated to the charity. Make sure to keep an eye out on our social media for details of when this beer is released in The Town Mouse to get a delicious pint for a good cause!

Freshers week was a busy week with our pop up bar at the Welcome village where we met some our new StuBrew members and finally see our existing members again. We showcased our new beer Back in Session (3.2% SIPA) as well as some of our favourite beers like Lab Session and Guapa. We had a great selection of our beers on offer which catered to everyone’s taste. Whether you prefer drinking a stout, IPA, pale ale, porter or a sour, we had it all!

At the end of Freshers week we had a really successful event at the Great North Museum for their History of Beer event. For this event we brewed a special Egyptian beer that proved more difficult than expected! The recipe we used was as close as we could make it to recipes used in ancient Egypt. After our first two brews which were unsuccessful we persevered and finally our third brew resulted in a delicious Egyptian beer we were very happy with. We even got pomegranate juice to serve with the beer so the colour and taste was even more similar to how it would have been back then! At this event we also showcased our Exam Room Tears (imperial stout), Lab Session (pale ale) and Back in Session (IPA).

We have a few events planned including StuBrew’s 7th Birthday which is fast approaching, so keep an eye out on our social media for updates about any new events we have coming.

Thats all the updates on everything we have been up to since lockdown ended and campus restrictions lightened. We really have appreciated your support through the lockdown and since things have opened back up. We have big ideas and plans. We’re so happy for you to join us our journey back to normality in the coming months.

A Fresher IPA collab with @gridbrewing launches 5pm Friday @thefreetradeinn

This Friday from 5pm we will be launching the first of 2 new beers coming over the next month.

“A Fresher IPA” is a New England IPA brewed in collaboration with @thealetrail using a tweaked version of his “Keys Phone Wallet Tabs” home brew competition winning brew (https://twitter.com/GridBrewing/status/872871249650778113). For the brew day we were also joined by @hoppytweets as we tried to teach these hopinionated beer aficionados a thing or two about how to actually make the stuff 🙂

Exclusively for launch night @thefreetrade there will also be the only cask of this beer in existence, which in addition to the Citra, Simcoe and Mosaic dry hop of the standard beer has also be hopped in the cask with Nelson Sauvin.

Come down this Friday and join us to try “A Fresher IPA” and more of our range…

Green #StPatricksDay collaboration beer with @ScotBio launches this Friday @mensbar

We’re excited to announce a very limited edition of Lab Session will be released this Friday to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, exclusively @mensbar.

green_lab_session.jpg
We have collaborated with @ScotBio to incorporate their product Phycocyanin, a natural blue extract from algae, which gives the beer a very distinctive green colour.

Some of the original research into Scottish Bioenergy’s production process for Phycocyanin was developed at Newcastle University by graduate EngD student Chelsea Brain under the supervision of Dr Gary Caldwell.

We’re super excited for you to try it, but be sure to get there fast as there is only 100L available. This version of Lab Session is very true to the name…

Friday 10th March: Brewery Bash Part 2 with @sghettimonstah

Next Friday (10th March), from 5pm, Stu Brew we will be holding its Brewery Bash Part 2, following on from our previous event at the brewery way back in early October. Following the success of the event, held with @sghettimonstah as the food outlet, we have decided to repeat the plans!

As usual, Stu Brew is opening the doors to its brewery and inviting you all to come down, have a look around and, most importantly, try some of our beers. We are situated around the back of Merz Court, Newcastle University, opposite Lovers Lane.

We will have a range of our beers on offer, including our Red Brick, Into the Black and Extended Overdraught!

Starting at around 5pm, we’ll stay at the brewery until around 10pm, and then head down to some other great pubs around Newcastle if people are interested.

On Saturday, our new Spiced Beer was brewed by our student brewmaster James, with help from two society members.

Some spices were added to the brew, followed by a final addition of orange peel and ginger, as can be seen in the images above. The beer is now currently on chill.

We can’t wait to taste it, and as importantly, decide upon a name for the beer!

This weekend, Extended Overdraught will be brewed. This brew will take place on Saturday.

This Weekends Brew Schedule

From now on, a weekly Stu Brew schedule/review will be posted in order to let you know what is happening within the society!

Yesterday was the first brew that we have completed since before Christmas. Red, with with the assistance of two of our society members, brewed Red Brick.

The plan for the upcoming weekend is to brew our new Spiced Beer, a recipe formulated by our student brewmaster, James.

The name of this beer is yet to be decided, but we cannot wait to for you to try it in the coming weeks!

Stu Brew’s Christmas Craft Beer Event

On Wednesday Stu Brew hosted its Christmas Craft Beer Event. Hundreds of people joined us throughout the day to sample great keg and cask beers from a number of the North East’s brewing scene!

Over the last year, we have been looking into ways to lessen the impact of brewing on the environment thanks to a grant that we received from the Institute for Sustainability. Following a short closed-door event with local brewers and key stakeholders at 11:30 hosted by Chris O’Malley, we opened our doors to the public for a beer festival.
